Who’s Your Daddy?

by Sheniqua Waters

I remember watching you when you were little and thinking how lucky I was to be your dad. That feeling has not changed. You have grown up to be a very special person. Though we may not see eye-to-eye on every issue, I want you to know how proud I am of you and that I respect the person you have become. I love you, Dad.

Have you ever received a letter from your father with similar words? If not, would you like to? It seems far too many people have never received enough kind words from their father. Take a moment to think about the feelings you have for the man who gave you life. Why do you feel the way you do?

I noticed in the novels I have written so far, I have a father figure in the every book. In one book, Laila, a girl who is sold into a harem, has an absent father who left his family to be with the woman he loved. In the book about Lily, a southern belle, there is a caring father who stays by the woman and child he loves despite overwhelming obstacles. In Seduced by the Pharaoh by Sheniqua Waters, the father is willing to fight to protect his family.

No matter what kind of father any of us have, I believe it is safe to say, we would like for him to be a loving protector and leader. It is said, the relationship we have with our father affects every relationship in our life – even how we view God.

So, now is the time to exam the relationship you have with the man who has affected your life. Maybe there is a small place in your heart that can find forgiveness for his shortcomings. Whether forgiveness is possible or not, try accepting the reality of the man who is your dad. After all, he is a man with hurts, a man with unrealized dreams. A man who is human… and not a fantasy man written in a book.
